Type 321 stainless steel contains titanium and provides good resistance to intergranular corrosion when exposed to intermittent temperatures of 800°F–1650°F. ASTM A240 Type 321 plate is used as a stabilising element in certain chromium-nickel steels, which are prone to intergranular precipitation during welding. It prevents chromium carbide precipitation resulting from exposure to elevated temperatures (800°F to 1500°F or 427°C to 816°C) and thereby maintains excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion.

The alloy is quite ductile and forms easily.
The high sulfur content of Alloy 303 plate also has a detrimental impact on hot workability. If hot forming is required, once again, 304 plate should be considered as an alternate selection.
The cold work hardening rate of 321 stainless steel plate makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel plate, but similar to 304 plate. The table below provides relevant machining data.
